Quick Answer
Yes – but not every bank allows it. Some Spanish banks let non-residents open an account using just a passport and a few supporting documents. Others require an NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) before they’ll let you apply.
If you’re planning to live, work, retire or buy property in Spain, you’ll almost certainly need an NIE eventually – even if you can open a bank account without one.
Here’s what you need to know.
What Is an NIE?
An NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a unique identification number issued to foreigners in Spain.
It doesn’t give you the right to live or work in Spain. Instead, it’s used to identify you when dealing with banks, tax authorities, government offices and many other organisations. Once issued, your NIE stays with you for life.
Good to know: An NIE is not the same as residency. Many non-residents have an NIE because they own property, pay taxes or carry out other official activities in Spain.
When Do You Need an NIE?
You’ll usually need an NIE if you want to:
- Buy a property
- Apply for a mortgage
- Work in Spain
- Become self-employed (Autónomo)
- Pay taxes
- Register a vehicle
- Open many resident bank accounts
- Deal with Spanish government departments
Even when it isn’t legally required, having an NIE often makes things much easier.
Opening a Bank Account Without an NIE
The good news is that it is possible. Many Spanish banks offer non-resident bank accounts, designed for people who live outside Spain but need access to Spanish banking.
Depending on the bank, you may be able to apply with:
- A valid passport
- Proof of your overseas address
- Proof of income or employment (if requested)
Every bank has its own requirements. Some will ask for an NIE immediately, while others may allow you to open an account first and provide your NIE later.
If you’re planning to move to Spain permanently, getting your NIE before opening an account is usually the simplest option.
Resident vs Non-Resident Bank Accounts
There are two main types of bank account in Spain.

If you’re relocating permanently, a resident account will usually be the better choice once your paperwork is complete.
Should You Get an NIE First?
If you’re only spending part of the year in Spain, a non-resident account may be enough.
If you’re moving permanently, we’d recommend applying for your NIE as early as possible.
You’ll probably need it sooner than you expect, and having it already in place makes opening accounts, arranging utilities and dealing with Spanish administration much easier.
How Do You Get an NIE?
The application process is usually straightforward.
In most cases you’ll need to:
- Complete the application forms.
- Pay the government fee.
- Book an appointment.
- Attend your appointment with the required documents.
- Receive your NIE certificate.
